DPP for Outdoor Apparel

Outdoor apparel combines complex multi-layer constructions with demanding performance chemistry. The EU Digital Product Passport under ESPR requires brands to document every layer — from shell fabric to insulation fill — with full material origin, chemical compliance, and recycled content verification.

Outdoor Apparel and ESPR: A Complex Fit

A three-layer hardshell jacket is not a single material — it is an engineered system. The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) requires each of those layers to be documented as distinct components, with individual fibre percentages, recycled content flags, and origin countries.

epassportify's product wizard allows you to add unlimited material rows per variant. Each row captures the component type (Main Fabric, Lining, Padding, Membrane), material name, percentage, whether it is recycled, and the recycled percentage. This maps directly to the multi-component structure of outdoor hardshells, softshells, down jackets, and base layers.

Key Documentation Requirements for Outdoor Brands

  • Shell Fabric: Weave type, fibre composition (e.g., 100% Nylon or 94% Polyester / 6% Elastane), recycled content percentage, and GRS certification where applicable.
  • Membrane / Laminate: Documented as a separate component. Chemical treatment status can be referenced in the Harmful Substances Declaration field.
  • Insulation Fill: Down fill power and source (traceable down programs), or synthetic insulation (rPET %) with GRS certificate number. Both are supported via the certification and recycled content fields.
  • Lining: Separate fibre composition entry. Recycled or renewable flag as applicable.
  • Trims & Hardware: Zips, buckles, and cords can be entered as additional material rows for products where full component transparency is required.
  • Production Countries: Confection, dyeing, and weaving country — all three required under ESPR traceability. Outdoor apparel supply chains often span multiple Asian countries across these three stages.

Recycled Content Verification

The outdoor sector has led adoption of recycled polyester and recycled nylon. ESPR requires that recycled content claims be verifiable, not just stated. In epassportify, you mark each material row as recycled, enter the recycled percentage, and record the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certificate number in the Certification Scheme field. This data appears on the public DPP page, giving retail buyers and end consumers a direct verification path.

Variants for Seasonal and Technical Updates

Outdoor brands release updated fabrics and treatments seasonally. When a shell fabric changes from one season to the next — even if the jacket's name and GTIN remain the same — you create a new variant in epassportify. The original QR codes remain valid and resolve to the correct variant data. No labels need to be reprinted for existing stock.

Implementing the Passport

1

Register the Product

Enter the product name, GTIN, and select the Outdoor Apparel category. Upload a product image.

2

Build the Layered BOM

Add separate material rows for shell, membrane, insulation, and lining. Enter exact fibre percentages and mark recycled content per component.

3

Map the Supply Chain

Enter confection, dyeing, and weaving countries. Add each key supplier with name and country.

4

Add Compliance Data

Record GRS or Bluesign certificate numbers, complete the harmful substances declaration, and add care instructions (washing temperature, drying method, re-treatment guidance).

5

Generate QR Labels

Issue serial numbers per batch and download PDF label sheets (24 per A4 page) or individual QR files for hang tags and care labels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I document down insulation traceability in epassportify?
Yes. You add down as a separate material component (e.g., "Padding: Down, 90% fill") and enter the relevant traceability certification — such as the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certificate number — in the Certification Scheme field. The supplier providing the down can be listed in the Supply Chain step.
How do I handle water-repellent (DWR) treatment documentation?
DWR treatments are documented through the Harmful Substances Declaration field, where you can reference the chemical supplier declaration or lab test confirming compliance with EU chemical restrictions. This appears on the public DPP page for regulatory inspection.
Our jacket model is updated each season with new fabrics. Do we need a new GTIN?
If the product's GTIN stays the same, you create a new variant in epassportify for the updated season. Each variant holds its own material composition, certifications, and supplier data. Existing QR codes on old stock continue to resolve correctly to the original variant.
Can we show recycled polyester percentage to retail buyers on the DPP page?
Yes. Every material row marked as recycled, with its recycled percentage entered, is displayed on the public DPP page with a Recycled badge. Retail buyers and auditors can see the exact composition at item level by scanning the product's QR code.
